About Degrowth.info

We are a political collective that runs the webportal degrowth.info, one of the most prominent online space providing resources on degrowth. We engage in collective political education by creating and sharing knowledge about degrowth and related struggles for radical transformation. We strive to put degrowth into practice through our own modes of internal organising and by developing a collective political voice which nurtures the conditions for a just social-ecological transformation.

The web portal degrowth.info provides information on degrowth as both an academic concept and a growing movement comprised of activists, practitioners and researchers. The main goal of the web portal is to create, compile, and disseminate information and knowledge about degrowth. It hosts a blog that produces original content about the latest developments in degrowth thinking and activism, from a diversity of authors. It collects existing scientific research (section “library”), information about events relevant to the international degrowth community (section “events”), as well as material on activist or more practical approaches to degrowth (section “get involved”).  It hosts various international initiatives such as the Feminist and Degrowth Alliance (FaDA) (section “international initiatives”). Thus, it helps to further promote, connect, and consider different approaches to degrowth and its broader societal implications.

About the role

Degrowth.info’s mission is to engage in collective political education by creating and sharing knowledge about degrowth and related struggles for radical transformation. This involves having a social media presence, but also offering other digital communication tools such as a newsletter, so as to reach as broad an audience as possible. We need a skilled individual to work closely with the rest of the team and coordinate our communications working group,  taking the lead on running our social media platforms and newsletter.

Degrowth.info’s working language is English, therefore confidence in both written and spoken English is important.

What you’ll do

As the communications coordinator you’ll be responsible for:

  • Coordinating the activities of the communications working group
  • Collaborating with the team to ensure our communications content supports and promotes the rest of our work; this includes monthly meetings with the full team.
  • Managing and increasing our social media presence: currently Instagram and Twitter (X)
  • Creating relevant content (both visual and textual) for social media posts, newsletters, and other communications channels
  • Writing and designing engaging newsletters, with the help of the rest of the team
  • Monitoring and analyzing social media and website metrics

Other skills appreciated:

  • Knowledge of alternative digital platforms (peertube, mastodon, decidim,…) to explore the potential of our presence there
  • Graphic design
  • Web design
  • Experience with grant applications

What we hope you’ll bring

  • Experience in social media management and content creation
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Creative mindset with an eye for detail
  • Proficiency in graphic design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Photoshop)
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Strong interest in degrowth values and/or social and environmental justice

What we offer

As part of our collective, you will help spread degrowth ideas and praxis around the world, you will connect and exchange with other degrowthers, and you will experience organising in a non-hierarchical caring group of people with a great diversity of backgrounds, experimenting and evolving together.

Our collective is composed of 9 members, based on 3 continents, working remotely. Most members participate as volunteers, and currently 2 persons are paid 15h and 7,5h. You would be the third paid person.  We work across various time zones, which gives flexibility to work from anywhere and set your own hours – while still needing to adapt to the rest of the team when necessary.

How to apply

If you are interested, please send your CV and a cover letter to contact@degrowth.info addressing how you would fit the job description and our team.

We strongly encourage applications from people from - or living in - the Global South, and/or people from underrepresented groups.

Application deadline: September 22nd 2024

Shortlisted applicants will be contacted within two weeks of the application deadline to arrange an interview. We’ll try to get back to all applicants regardless of whether their application is successful, but might not be able to do so if applications are numerous.

We look forward to hearing from you and potentially welcoming you to our collective!

Degrowth Network Australia

Degrowth perspectives

As degrowth becomes a more familiar term worldwide, a loose informal network of Australian degrowth activists, scholars and advocates has emerged into the formal Degrowth Network Australia (DNA). The network has a public launch in a participatory degrowth workshop at 2pm–4pm on 26 February 2023 — a National Sustainable Living Festival event at the Black Spark Cultural Centre in Northcote, an inner suburb of Melbourne (Victoria, Australia).

Organising the Degrowth Network

The first International Degrowth Conference held in Paris in 2008 was followed by another ten other conferences, most of which took place in Europe. These conferences provided room for the Degrowth community to meet and exchange on latest research. In Christiania Town (Copenhagen) in 2018, just before the 6th International Degrowth Conference in Malmö, degrowthers met in a new format. Going beyond research-related conversations, they instead discussed the “how” of Degrowth and started to organise the movement.
