Abstract: Bangladesh has been a successful laboratory case for hegemonic growth model development practices by the developmentalist forces and their native allies and failed the people for their quest for affluence and a collective better life. Growth model has been a tool for sustaining poverty through hegemonic social and cultural institutions and practices. Based on Bangladesh experience and comparing it with other countries, this paper tries to say that we need degrowth which is, in a way, a way towards peoples aspirations for ‘amar sontan jeno thake dudhe bhate ( wish my child gets a simple good life…… ) or for a sustainably affluent life and now to be free from the global-local ‘growth and development’ regime by which Bangladesh has been trapped. The paper will suggest some strategic way forwards for a future Bangladesh free from the growth trap and to achieve ecological sustainability and social equity.
