The 10th International Degrowth Conference and the 15th Conference of the European Society for Ecological Economics (ESEE) will be held in the city of Pontevedra (Galicia, Spain) from 18 – 21 June 2024. This joint conference is part of the  “Pontevedra ESEE-Degrowth 2024” activities, which will establish Pontevedra as the European capital of degrowth in 2024. See the presentation video here.

The event titled 'Science, Technology, and Innovation beyond growth: Cultivating collective creativity for a sustainable future,' will consist of two types of activities:

  • The main Conference (The Conferenceis scheduled to take place from 18-21 June 2024. It will feature a diverse range of sessions, including academic lectures, expert panels, and artistic workshops. With an expected participation of over 500 attendees, including academics and activists, this conference aims to bring together a wide range of perspectives and international expertise on ecological economics and degrowth.
  • Civic engagement and citizen-oriented initiatives (Beyond the Conference) will be organized throughout the year and during the conference days.  These activities will be held at various locations across the city and will include  workshops, debates, exhibitions, and contests. Open to the public, these activities will provide opportunities for active involvement and participation.

The event is organized around principles of degrowth, with a strong focus on advancing human and environmental wellbeing, promoting cooperation, democracy, inclusiveness, transparency, and solidarity. The Organizing Committee warmly invites everyone to join them in the welcoming city of Pontevedra.

The call for special sessions is open until October 16th.

Special Sessions aim to give space within the Conference to special tracks that are not among those proposed by the organization, sessions with a unique topic and format, or groups of people that want to present the progress or results of a specific project. The organisers invite special sessions that provide artistic or interactive avenues to learn, debate, and co-create in transdisciplinary manners, such as dancing, futuring, visioning, painting, sculpture, songwriting, theatre, improv, poetry, backcasting, world cafés, board games, yoga and meditation etc. You can find more information here.

The call for abstracts opens in November.

This conference call presents a timely opportunity to build new bridges between scholars who focus on the ways in which power and politics shape science and technology, and vice versa. Our conference aims to facilitate connections between degrowth, Ecological Economics, and other social science communities, including Science, Technology, and Society (STS), Critical Management and Organization Studies, Responsible Research and Innovation studies, and others.

The proposal submission for abstract will open in November. You can find more information here.

Organising the Degrowth Network

The first International Degrowth Conference held in Paris in 2008 was followed by another ten other conferences, most of which took place in Europe. These conferences provided room for the Degrowth community to meet and exchange on latest research. In Christiania Town (Copenhagen) in 2018, just before the 6th International Degrowth Conference in Malmö, degrowthers met in a new format. Going beyond research-related conversations, they instead discussed the “how” of Degrowth and started to organise the movement.
