Abstract: The paper takes up Georg Vobruba’s theoretical figure of ‘actors’ knowledge of system constraints’ and re-examines it in the light of late modern growth society. It investigates the specific mode of reproduction of this form of society as well as the contradictions inherent to it that come about through people’s acting in compliance with the system’s requirements. Finally, it explores the emancipatory potentials of a society in which people’s mentality of growth, their interest in continuous growth, has long inscribed itself into institutional structures and political routines.
